Small Off Grid Solar System
The AS4.2 is the second kit in our range and is suitable for a large caravan & shed, cabin, granny flat or small home with after hours consumption of up to 3kWh and daily consumption up to 12kWh in summer and 7kWhr in winter. This system is essentially the same as the AS2.5 except for the larger battery capacity.
Electrical Cabinet (700W x1300H x 300D):
Miscellaneous:
The display consists of an OLED screen that displays the battery level, Voltage and current. It also displays system settings, system status, cell voltages and any warnings.
The standard solar circuit breaker allows up to 25A from the solar panels and will trip if there is a fault current greater than this. This circuit breaker can be upgraded to higher current rating if higher power solar panels are to be used.
The system incorporates an earth leakage circuit breaker to provide protection from 240v electric shocks. With the earth wire connected to local ground, the RCBO will trip and switch the 240V power off if something touches the live 240V wire and creates a connection to ground.
The MC4 solar plugs and extension leads provide a simple plug and play cable connection for your solar panels. The manual has detailed diagrams explaining how to connect solar panels to the system.
The system will operate with between one and 6 panels with the supplied Y connector or more panels if a combiner box is purchased: Allied Solar recommends either 4 or 6 Canadian Solar CS6R HiKu panels (395 to 420 Watts per panel).
The system is provided with 10m solar extension cables allowing simple plug and play wiring between the panels and the cabinet.
The generator start plug is a volt free contact that is compatible with most auto start generators. A plug in extension cable is provided to fit the aviation plug connection and to run to the generator start contacts. If the AS4.2 is running low on energy it will start the generator automatically and switch the 15A GPO power points over to the generator.
The AS4.2 has a predict function which monitors the normal battery consumption and if it predicts that the energy will run low over the next 12 hours it will start the generator early. The system will run the generator until it predicts that it can make it through the rest of the night. This means that if the generator is required, it will run during the late afternoon and evening instead of starting in the middle of the night. This feature can be switched on or off as required.
Note that the change over from batteries to generator, or from generator to batteries, results in a power outage of a few seconds. If continuous power is required then a separate UPS will be needed.
The system has a very low standby current meaning that it can be switched off, unplugged and put into storage for months or years if required. Being self contained and portable, it is easy to move around using a trolley so that it can be locked away inside while you are away. It also has bolt holes so that it can be secured in place if required. The system is 700mm wide so will fit through a normal 800mm doorway.
The system has multiple levels of protection to ensure that failures are unlikely to result in major damage.
The BMS monitors battery temperature, charging and discharging currents to ensure the batteries are operating within the allowable parameters.
There are three layers of protection to prevent over charging of the batteries: 1. The charge controller is programmed to maintain the battery voltage in the correct range. 2. the Charge controller has a separate shut down if the voltage is too high. 3. the BMS will turn off the solar panels if any cell voltage is too high.
There are three layers of protection to prevent over-discharge: 1. the BMS will switch the system off or over to generator if the battery level is low. 2. The Inverter switches off if the battery level is very low. 3. The BMS also shuts down the whole system and goes into standby mode if the battery voltage is very low.
An audible beeper will sound if the system has a fault and is in need of attention.
The BMS also monitors internal temperatures and starts fans or shuts the system down if components get too hot.
The BMS monitors the wiring harness to check for any wire breaks.
The BMS monitors cell voltages and balances the battery cells to maintain maximum performance and will also invoke protection systems if the battery cell voltages go out of range.
The display will show any system faults
